The Devil & Tom Walker
In this essay,
I am going to show the relationship between the values of trustworthiness and
thankful with the characters and some situations that happened in the story of “The
Devil and Tom Walker”, but first, I consider that for understanding the
followings comparisons we should know the meaning of each value.
Then so, Trustworthiness
means how much someone or something deserves trust and Thankful
means grateful or showing thanked with someone or something.
Now, we
should focus on the characters of the story that may show or not the values already
mentioned. These characters are Tom
Walker, Tom´s Wife and The Devil or Old Scratch.
At the beginning
of the story was told the “miserable” way in that Tom and his wife lived and
felt, and the kind of toxic relationship that they had. This shows that they weren´t
thankful with the relationship and
the life they had together. In addition, they were in a constant quarrel, they
cheat each other and Tom´s Wife had hidden the more valuable things they had
without telling Tom were she put them. Especially this last situation shows the
lack of trustworthiness they had
between them, because is obvious they don´t trust each other.
Later is introduce
the Old Scratch or The Devil, that you only by knowing his name, you may infer
he doesn’t deserves to much Trustworthiness,
and I consider that Tom doesn’t acknowledged this at all, because he ended up
making a bargain with him for acquiring the hidden treasure of a dead pirate. Whatever,
before the deal was made, Tom´s wife showed why she does not deserved Tom´s trustworthiness, because when Tom told
her about the treasure and the deal, and after she saw that he would not go
after it, she decided to escape with their valuable things and after that, she disappeared.
After this,
Tom complete the part of the bargain that said that he should turn into a
usurer, he made “friends”, who he shared money, but even though they were
friends he did not doubt to take them into the bankruptcy, this shows how unthankful
he was.
In conclusion,
at “The Devil & Tom Walker” we find both values, Trustworthiness and
thankful, as well as their respective anti-values.
